Science is the rising field in Pakistan and so far it
has played a significant role in the growth of the country. Pakistan is rich in
genetic resources, such as it has diverse human population, crops and other
species. Drug development protein expression assays population genetics and
clinical trials much room development remains. Because it has its own
importance in biological sciences. The National Institute for Biotechnology and
Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) Faisalabad is a federal research institute which
was established in 1992.
There are five research division in NIBGE, such as
Agricultural Biotechnology, Health technology, Industrial Biotechnology,
Environmental bio technology. NIBGE has so far submitted 40 cases of laboratory
manipulation field trials and commercial release of genetically modified crops
to the national biosafety committee.
Cotton is the main crop of Pakistan so cotton
biotechnology especially on the cotton leaf curl virus disease.
Research on
human pharmaceutical protein
The research in medical molecular biology group at
NCEMB and SBS have cloned several pharmaceutical protein genes which provides
an excellent resource material for large scale production of human interferon
ALFA 2a.
Biopharming
for new drugs and vaccines
The first recombinant plant resulting pharmaceutical
protein (PDP) was human serum albumin, originally produced in 1990. Biopharming
is an upcoming area in Pakistan where new drugs and therapeutic vaccines can be
developed in plants through genetic engineering.
Lysine
At NIBGE,
corynebacterium glutamicum strain is available and has been studied in the
institute for the production of lysine. The main task is to upscale
fermentation process for mass production of lysine. Pakistan imports lysine to encounter
local demand of animal feed industry.
